Join me as we learn from an Ontario farmer how we can enjoy a gorgeous garden and at the same time, be environmentally responsible.? We?re at Frisia Floral Greenhouse in Ontario with Sietse Elsinga.

He is the owner of these beautiful greenhouses and he is also an instructor with the Environmental Farm Plant in Ontario.

Mark:? What do you like to mulch with outdoors?

Sietse:? Basically, I like bark mulch that I use outside.? You probably know it

Mark:? I like the finely ground up pine and cedar mulch and I like softwoods best of all.? They are the ones that are generally available anyhow.? But, what I try and steer consumers away from are the big chunks of bark.? They don?t really insulate the soil very well in my experience.

Sietse:? You are correct.? They gotta wathc out for not putting too much mulch on as you are probably well aware of.

Mark:? And the reason for that is?

Sietse:? Tie up nitrogen so it?s not available for your plants and your plants might start looking very yellow.

Mark:? Yeah, you get some yellowing leaves and you?ve used a lot of mulch and it maybe time to just put a little nitrogen in the soil to feed and boost them. But, other than that, the benefits of mulching are what?

Sietse:? Keeping weeds down and keeping the moisture into the soil and

Mark:? So if you retain moisture in the soil, then theory goes, the plants will require less water

Sietse:? Yes, that?s correct

Since moving to the country, I?ve learned a lot from Ontario farmers and their approach to stewardship.? Farmers have the opportunity to enhance their environmental knowledge through the Environmental Farm Plan, a voluntary educational program.? Through the EFP process, farmers highlight environmental strengths on their farm, identify potential areas of environmental concerns and set realistic goals and timetables for improvement.
