KUCHING: More community broadband centres (CBC) offering high speed Internet access will be set up in the state to
enable the people to have direct access to the World Wide Web.
Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communication Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong said there are currently 34 CBCs across the state?s 27 parliamentary constituencies.
?We (government) will continue to set up more CBCs in areas where electricity through the grid is made available in time to come.
?This is to bring market information, financial services and healthcare services to remote areas and to help change and improve rural livelihoods,? Manyin said when launching the Sarawak ICT Expo yesterday.

The minister pointed out that the state faces unique challenges in developing its communication infrastructure due to the rugged topography and diffused population, which discouraged independent service providers from serving the less profitable market segments.
As a result, he said the state recorded the third lowest household broadband penetration in the country at 47.5 per cent for the first quarter of this year.
Manyin stressed that the government aims to narrow the urban and rural digital divide and to improve productivity, knowledge and communication for rural folk.
He said the state government, in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), has worked to bring information and communication technology (ICT) to rural areas with the implementation of telecommunication and broadband connectivity.
