Report: Rangers brawler Boogaard had brain ailment

(AP) ? Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain ailment related to Alzheimer's disease that is caused by repeated blows to the head, the New York Times reported.

The 28-year-old Boogaard, who died in May of an accidental overdose of alcohol and oxycodone, was found to have had CTE ? which can be diagnosed only after the death of the patient, according to the third story of an extensive three-part series on Boogaard posted on the newspaper's website Monday night.

Dr. Ann McKee, one of four co-directors of Boston University's Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy and the director of the center's brain bank, saw signature brown spots near the outer surface of Boogaard's brain, which are revealing signs of CTE.

Such damage in someone as young as Boogaard was surprising. Symptoms of the condition include memory loss, impulsiveness, mood swings, and addiction.

"To see this amount? That's a 'wow' moment," McKee said of the damage to Boogaard's brain tissue. "This is all going bad."

The disease was more advanced in Boogaard than it was in famed enforcer Bob Probert, who died of heart failure in 2010 at 45. He played 16 seasons in the NHL and often struggled with alcohol and drug addiction.

Reggie Fleming, who was 73, and 59-year-old Rick Martin, were other hockey players who were found to have CTE.

Obama pushes payroll tax cut extension (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama wants voters to get involved in the debate over extending the reduced payroll tax and he's asking them to tell members of Congress to keep the cut in place.

"Let your members of Congress know where you stand," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address. "Tell them not to vote to raise taxes on working Americans during the holidays. Tell them to put country before party. Put money back in the pockets of working Americans. Pass these tax cuts."

Obama's address directs listeners to the whitehouse.gov website, where an online calculator lets them determine how much money it's worth to them to continue the 2 percent reduction in the payroll tax that took effect this year. A family with income of $50,000 a year would pay $1,000 more in payroll taxes if Congress does not act by the end of this year to extend that reduction.

Democrats want to expand the reduction in addition to extending it. Republican leaders say they're committed to passing an extension, fearing political fallout if payroll taxes rise on Jan. 1 on 160 million wage-earners. The GOP rank-and-file appears divided, with many Republican senators voting against an extension supported by their leadership this week.

There's also disagreement about how or whether to pay for any extension. Democrats favor a new tax on millionaires; Republicans prefer to cut federal spending.

"We're going to keep pushing Congress to make this happen. They shouldn't go home for the holidays until they get this done," Obama said in his address. "And if you agree with me, I could use your help."

Obama also took note of a new monthly jobs report out Friday that showed the economy added 120,000 jobs in November, a positive number. "We need to keep this growth going and strengthen it," the president said.

Republicans devoted their weekly address to promoting a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, which is headed for a vote in the Senate after failing in the House last month.

Democratic leaders worked aggressively to defeat the measure in the House, saying that such a requirement could force Congress to cut billions from social programs during times of economic downturn and that disputes over what to cut could result in Congress ceding its power of the purse to the courts. The result was that the amendment got majority support but fell short of the two-thirds needed to advance a constitutional amendment.

Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, said "the impending vote to amend the Constitution represents a choice between changing business as usual in Washington or embracing the status quo that we can no longer afford."

"The real reason many lawmakers don't want a balanced budget amendment is the exact reason why it's so essential," Snowe said. "They don't want their hands tied; they want to continue to spend without restraint."

Like Obama, she asked listeners to make their views known.

"Contact your senators and urge them to support our balanced budget amendment," Snowe said, "so that we finally seize the fiscal reins and reclaim our future for our children and our grandchildren."

Exclusive: Trulia hires PayPal executive as CFO (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Real estate website Trulia Inc said on Thursday it hired veteran finance executive and deal-maker Sean Aggarwal from eBay Inc's PayPal to help manage a business that has grown significantly in the past year.

Aggarwal, formerly vice president of finance at PayPal and chief financial officer of eBay's U.S. category, is joining Trulia as the company's CFO.

Trulia, backed by venture capital firms Accel Partners and Sequoia Capital, also hired Scott Darling, former general counsel of Imperva Inc, a data-security software company that went public last month.

Trulia, which competes with Zillow Inc in the online real estate market, has been growing quickly despite a lackluster U.S. housing market. In the third quarter, Trulia's website averaged 16.5 million monthly unique visitors, up from 8.7 million a year earlier.

Pete Flint, co-founder and chief executive of Trulia, said the company hired Aggarwal and Darling to help manage what has become a much bigger business.

"We see a long-term opportunity to be an independent public company, but when that happens will be when we're ready," Flint told Reuters. "These executives have private company and public company experience -- both of those are important for Trulia."

Zillow went public in July and its shares almost doubled on the first day, valuing the company at almost $1 billion. The shares have since fallen and recently traded at $22.38, just above their $20 IPO price. Zillow is currently worth just over $600 million, according to Thomson Reuters data.

At PayPal, Aggarwal ran finance at several divisions, including PayPal Mobile. He also worked on eBay's recent acquisition of mobile payment company Zong and led the financial integration of Bill Me Later, which eBay acquired in 2008 for almost $1 billion.

Aggarwal, who is an angel investor in Silicon Valley, was also previously director of finance at Amazon.com and PepsiCo and an investment banker at Merrill Lynch.

Flint said Aggarwal's deal-making experience was another draw for Trulia. The company bought Movity in late 2010, it's only acquisition to date.

"We're always intrigued by other opportunities," Flint said.
